Dictionary.com vs Merriam-Webster

Yes this is a question. Both have good ratings and offline mode but I'm more interested in which people prefer premium wise.

Searching for a good note keeping app

Posted: 27 Dec 2016 08:08 AM PST

After Evernote changed their pricing scheme,I used Gnotes extensively. And since last month or so, Gnotes have also changed its pricing drastically. Its a subscription based model and the pricing is too high.In the free version, you can only manually sync(no auto sync) and only once a day. There's also no pinlock without upgrading to pro.

I am searching for a good note keeping app since a long time now.I need syncing, folder arrangement and some basic editing. Here are the apps that I have used.

1) Keep: Excellent app but am not comfortable using it for study notes or longer notes.

2) Simplenote: I am not really a fan of the tag system and find it a little difficult and cluttered. Also, it doesn't support any attachment understandably.

3) Omni Notes: Just installed this. It looks good and has most of the features I need but doesn't have cloud sync.

4) Onenote: It just feels too heavy.

5) Notebook by Zoho corporation: This is the prettiest. But the sync feature isn't very reliable and the typing experience is just slow for me. This is the only app, where I feel that my general way of typing is lagging.

6) Google Docs: Again, it feels very heavy and mostly depends on internet connectivity.

I have used some more apps that am not remembering now. So do you know of any app that has those features? Paid apps are fine but not a subscription model.

Castbox VS Pocket casts- A comparison.

Posted: 26 Dec 2016 06:05 PM PST

A follow up from my post from yesterday.I am writing this because I didn't see many detailed reviews for Castbox( as it's relatively newer I guess).

So I ended up getting both Pocket casts and castbox, and here's their individual distinguishing features.

1) Podcast discovery page: Pocket cast has a simpler layout, just showing the thumbnails of the channels. While, castbox has a more detailed layout. Categorising channels accordingly. I found the castbox layout to be more efficient to discover new channels. Castbox also shows podcasts from more countries. Like I am from India and I can change country to India in Castbox but not in Pocket casts.

2) Downloading and Syncing: Both have two unique features here. You can schedule downloads in Castbox but not in Pocket casts. However in Pocket casts you can select individual channels whose podcast you want to download, which you can't do in Castbox yet. Both supports sd card I believe as you can change the download folder of podcasts. And Castbox does support syncing. I have uninstalled and reinstalled just to check, and it saves my subscribed channels and even searches.Pocket cast doesn't save your searches.

3) Design: Both have good designs. In castbox you get 2 themes(light+ dark) for 2 color schemes( orange and purple), so total 4 themes. While in Pocket casts you get 2 themes ( light+dark) for the default red. However,I feel Pocket casts have a better material design. Subscribing to channels is a smoother experience in Pocket casts.

4) Additional feature: Castbox has an additional option for radio. It has a lot of channels to discover and grouped according to genre.I really loved that, as in my place we don't have proper radio channels and definitely not ones with so many options!

So yeah.thats it. I will add more features as I come across. If you know of something else, feel free to comment. I am new to podcasts and I am only learning more about them gradually. 😇

Pocket cast has better material design

Castbox has better podcast discovery page

Various genres of Radio channels in Castbox

Edit:

1) So apparently,Pocketcasts doesn't let you play any podcast without subscribing to it first. But you can do that in Castbox.

2) Setting up a custom folder for podcast download is easier in Castbox. You can just browse your android file system and add a folder.Whereas in Pocket casts, you have to add a folder in file manager first , copy the path and add that in storage settings.

Forcing a contact into DirectShare?

Posted: 27 Dec 2016 06:04 AM PST

Is there any way to force a contact / app into the DirectShare menu in Marshmallow?

I have a handful of contacts that are available to share directly in Google Photos, but don't know how to get a few more in there. All gmail users, all people I've shared photos with. But not all are added.

Thanks!

2nd snapchat

Posted: 27 Dec 2016 08:20 AM PST

Hello, I recently bought a Samsung galaxy s7 and this is my first android phone. I have 2 snapchat accounts as I have 2 whatsapp numbers, for whatsapp I found GBWhatsapp which I really enjoy but for snapchat I couldn't find a good client. Has any of you an idea? The parallel space like things seem not to work as I'd like.

Thanks in advance

Anyone tried latest editions of both in Android and Windows? I use 1password since Mac and iPhone and now I probably want to switch to any of these. Would prefer something without a keyboard but with notification input like LastPass (as I have heard)

[question] Google Play Store displays two currencies, and neither one is correct...

Posted: 26 Dec 2016 03:40 PM PST

Google play Store thinks I'm in a different country, and the regional restrictions and fucking me now. I already added a new CC with an address in my current country and made a purchase with it, but nothing changed. I see everything in the play Store in Gbp, when I try to buy it, it's shows the price in CRC, and I need Euro. Any advice?

App to force screen timeout

Posted: 27 Dec 2016 08:44 AM PST

I bought my mum a Amazon Fire 7 which I installed cyanogen mod on. It seems perfect as she only really uses hangouts and a game called spell tower. Problem is the case doesn't have a magnet power switch like the old Nexus 7 she had before.

She often plays a bit of spell tower, closes the case and the game keeps running with the screen still on draining all the battery, is there any app solution to this, something that would bypass whatever keep awake mechanism full screen games use?
