TIL that Poweramp alpha 4 hi res audio works perfect in Nougat (GS7)

Posted: 30 Dec 2016 08:16 PM PST

I been using the Nougat Beta in my S7 (Exynos) without support of the hi res mode for wired headphones in alpha 3 (available from beta program). Today I downloaded the alpha 4 from apkmirror and finally the hi res is back and works perfect.

I don't know if that version will work on all Nougat roms, so if someone can report using other phones will be useful for others :)

What Android wear needs in 2017

Posted: 30 Dec 2016 04:58 PM PST

It needs awareness. Android wear need companies to promote the devices to end users. Something going on sale doesnt mean anything. There has been 0 ASUS watch 3 advertisement. Apple is all over my TV advertising the Apple watch. Samsung is not using Android wear thus no android wear ads. In the 3 years of android wear existence how many watch ads have you seen? None. This is why its important for google to come in and advertise the products to consumers. Android OEMs suck at advertisement. Only samsung and Google promote their devices on national TV. These same OEMS fail to promote their Android flagship phone. Android = OEMs sucking at marketing.

Help me turn my aunt's TV and Android box thingy into a true Smart TV

Posted: 31 Dec 2016 01:43 PM PST

Happy New year everyone!

I'm a little lost. My aunt was looking into upgrading her TV when some friend recommended buying a media box. My best guess is this thing is supposed to work like a Roku, but on the cheap, and now she's stuck with it.

All I can get from the box is it's branded as "SPC Smartee", nothing else. It runs on Android 4.2.2, outputs in HDMI, and is controlled by the most exasperating remote I've ever seen.

I found the maker googling about, they have very little information and their customer service is non-existent.

The device has its own GUI, which works ok. However, any app installed thinks it's a phone, or tablet, and controlling them with the remote is a complete nightmare, if possible at all in some cases. I.e.: anything that involves scrolling or quick tapping.

She's mainly interested in using it for Netflix and YouTube, and maybe for the odd podcast. I've tried using the remote features on these apps (Watch on TV), but these don't work from tablet to "tablet". I've tried different casting apps (Chromecast, Miracast), but the device isn't recognizable.

I'll post some pictures to give a better idea on what I'm dealing with. Here's the album

Is there a way to pair another Android to it, or control it in some way?

EDIT: Added the album. Also, I forgot the full name of the device.

LG just sent back my G4 claiming its liquid damaged and out of warranty...

Posted: 31 Dec 2016 07:47 AM PST

When it failed in warranty, was never dropped in any liquid and was boot looping (which is unheard of for LG right?) Anyone have advice on how to deal with them?

Edit: Called my carrier (T-Mobile) and politely explained how unacceptable this is. They agreed and offered me a replacement phone, they werent sure what would ship but it would be a current generation smart phone.

So, yaaaay T-Mobile!

Computer showing mobile versions of websites when tethering to LG V10

Setting tablet as an eReader

Posted: 31 Dec 2016 03:46 PM PST

I've recently purchased a tablet (Galaxy tab A 7) primarily to replace a super old kindle. In the past I've used the website www.kinstant.com on my kindle to strip down websites for article-like viewing. Through my kindle I was able to adjust font size, spacing,etc... immediately.

For my new tablet the transcoding results in a font size too small that cannot be adjusted using Chrome or Firefox (even through changing accesibility settings). Additionally after transcoding, my browsers do not detect the page as an article, thus cannot be enabled. If I go to the website directly, article mode can be enabled but this usually requires the Web page to fully load and then reloaded as an article - costing quite a bit of time. Are there any other alternatives to this approach?

Additionally I have twilight as a blue light filter and an ebook reader app that I like. I'd like to know if you have any other recommendations for setting my tablet up.

Thanks for your help

How to unlock phone with broken screen to recover internal storage?

Posted: 31 Dec 2016 03:38 PM PST

I have a Note 4 with a completely black screen. Doesn't respond to touches, but the physical buttons work and the LED notification light works.

I'm trying to get the photos and other files off the internal storage, but when I connect it to my computer I can't access the files (pic). I'm assuming this is because the device is locked.

Is there a way for me to remotely unlock the device and access the files? I'm a little desperate because I have some valuable photos on there that I thought I had backed up, but I don't :/ Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It seems like it's only gotten worse since I joined the program a couple years ago. Now, when my Moto G Play running Marshmallow just sits overnight, the app drains 30%+ of the battery. It also seems to be always running and taking up 300mb RAM.

has anyone else figured out a way to help deal with this? I don't really want to leave the program and uninstall the app, as the rewards are pretty sweet...

Erasing phone data without factory reset

Posted: 31 Dec 2016 01:27 PM PST

Hi I am giving my phone to my girlfriend (Samsung s5). I want to do a complete wipe, but I don't want to lose my APN data because it was a pain to set up, so I'd prefer not to do a factory reset.

I was goin to

  • uninstall all my apps that I downloaded
  • Switch the microsd card
  • Delete all my messages
  • Uninstall chrome and clear it's settings
  • Remove all my accounts, especially googles and install hers Gmail account
  • switch out the sim card
  • us es explorer to look for any leftover files, pics or audio etc

I don't want anything from my phone leftover for her to snoop on. She's not techie tho, so I mean I don't want her to reinstall WhatsApp and see all my contacts. Passwords or pics or things like that. Do you think this would work? Is there a better way? It took me a couple days of experimenting to get my apns working on this unlocked phone so I'm hoping not to have to do that again

Need some advice

Posted: 31 Dec 2016 03:19 AM PST

Hi all...

Recently, I bought a Moto Z Play and it is excellent! Seeing me, a family member now wants to get an Android phone. The question is which one? We are pretty much a Windows-centric family in that we extensively use Surface devices, the MS ecosystem and (till now) Windows phones (my secondary phone now is my 950XL while for the family member in question, her phones are the 640XL and the 830).

Her budget is INR 25,000 (or US$ 365 approx.). What are her options? Her priorities are : (1) Good battery life (2) smooth performance (3) Dual SIM (4) Independent mSD card - not a hybrid option and (5) min 32GB internal storage. She would expect to use the phone for about 18 months.

I would recommend the MZP, but I am loathed to suggest it as I use it and it would get confusing and boring (:>)).

If all fails then yes, the MZP would suit her perfectly though I suspect it may be a bit heavy for her.

What would you folks recommend? And, she will be buying it in India. Thanks in advance for you help.

Polar Heart Rate Monitor (HRM), Polar Stride Sensor, and Android Wear....what app to use to make them all connect together?

Posted: 31 Dec 2016 04:11 AM PST

This is a shot in the dark but heres my dilemma. I have an LG Watch Urbane. I run indoors on a treadmill. I recently purchased a Polar H7 heart rate monitor (HRM) and I've found a few apps that work. All the apps will sync the HRM to the phone for real time tracking during runs, but only one or two (ghostracer, endomondo) will then display the heartrate in real time on my watch. MapMyRun and the other big name apps will not do this which is frustrating.

I've been using endomondo now for a while but noticed that, because I'm running indoors, the app wont track my distance, and more importantly, wont allow me to edit in the distance after the run. To combat this, I purchased a polar stride sensor which I had hoped would give me real time distance stats. Well, that sensor doesnt connect with endomondo. In fact, the only app ive found that provides real time stats on heart rate and stride is the adidas train and run app. However.....the adidas app does not have an android wear companion app to check my heart rate on my watch as I run.

So, I'm in a bind and I'm hoping for help. Does anyone know of an app that:

  1. Works with a Polar H7 HRM and a Polar stride sensor; and

  2. Has android wear support that shows real time tracking of heart rate.

Any help here would be so appreciated. Tried strava, endomondo, ghostrunner, mapmyrun, adidas train and run, runkeeper, wahoo fitness, polar flow (which doesnt even have android support for its own stride sensor!) and sport gear tracker.

Thank you so much in advance.

Emoji Keyboard Safety(Non-Rooted)?

Posted: 31 Dec 2016 05:38 AM PST

Hey /r/androidapps

New user migrating over from iOS, and trying to recreate my old functionality on my new device (Moto G4).

I hate the stock Google emojis. They look squished and I can't tell what they are compared to my old iOS emoji stock.

I downloaded and am trying Textra with the iOS emoji pack, so I can at least see the emojis people send me, but I'm trying to replace them at the keyboard level so I can see them as I'm used to.

I downloaded and tried a couple of options, like Emoji Keyboard 7, and I get this message:

Attention

This input method may be able to collect all the text you type, including personal data like passwords and credit card numbers. It comes from the app Emoji Keyboard 7. Use this input method?

I uninstalled it, but would use it if I could be reasonably sure it's safe and not going to collect my keystrokes.

Any insight into whether it does act as a keystroke logger? Should I be concerned anyway even if not? Any alternate recommendations? Non-root options preferably, as I know just enough about rooting to possibly ruin my device, but not enough to proceed confidently.

Thanks for any help.

EDIT: Wording

How is spotify taking up 23gb on my phone?

Posted: 31 Dec 2016 08:51 AM PST

I was clearing out my pictures off my phone because i was almost out of space and noticed that it only freed up a fraction of the space on my phone i thought it would. Then i use the diskusage app to find out whats really going on and i see Spotify is taking up almost 23gb of space. How is that possible? I have premium so i download the songs to my phone in high quality to use less cell data but that should only account for maybe about a quarter of that much space. Ive had to uninstall/reinstall spotify and download the songs several times. Im assuming it never actually deleted the downloaded songs during uninstall and then redownloaded them multiple times? Any ways to prevent this happening again in the future?

Looking for apps or games that are just calming.

For example Rainy Mood or the game Euro Truck Simulator where you can just use it for a few minutes or hours and zone out
