Sapir - September 29th

I really have to apologize - I've been up to my head with other stuff and have only now had the time to release a version.

Nothing proprietary new, just the regular fixes.

The changelog is the same as the last one :)

Sapir - September 26th

It took longer than I meant, and some of it was due to unfortunate merges, but the new release is here.

Nothing new, except the CM updates - which also means Calculator will now work.

Some of the users didn't like the transparent status bar. While I like it, I can relate - so, hopefully next build, I'll put a toggle option for that. I'm also working on tablet mode and individual DPI changer, but both are still some time coming.

I'd like to hear from you on new features you would like here in the comments section.

Download links, as always, on the right side.

Rootear dispositivos Android ICS/JB

Gracias al rooteo he podido instalar Drop-down status bar switch

Sapir - September 23rd

It's that time of the day - the build for the 23rd are here.

Main changes in this build:

  1. Added battery styles in status bar (see earlier post)
  2. Corrected a crash in Trebuchet (Mr. Stone, thank you for reporting it :) )
  3. Superuser issue is solved from CM Gerrit

I know some of you don't updated on a daily basis (what?), so I'll repeat my earlier procedure which only applies to the Galaxy Tab build.
The Galaxy Tab build will WIPE your data if you come from a Sapir build earlier than 20120922. It's not an arbitrary decision, this is done to maintain compatibility with CM10, when they return to this layout too.

But, worry not. Please follow the following procedure before installing:
  1. Perform nand backup from the recovery
  2. Install Sapir
  3. Install gapps
  4. Reboot
  5. Reboot to recovery
  6. Advance restore only data
The download links are, as always, to the right.

All that remains is the full updated changelog:
  • Added DPI Changer in Display settings
  • Transparent nav bar / status bar
  • Additional Battery styles in status bar, including circle
  • Brightness control in lock screen
  • Option to disable auto screen-lock after a phone call
  • Delay auto screen-off when answering call
  • T9 Dialer searches also in company and nickname
  • Option to keep the proximity sensor on during calls using a headset
  • Messaging - Ability to change soft keyboard when composing
  • *** (Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000) * Using old partition structure, so data partition is large enough for user applications *
  • (Google Galaxy Nexus) Changed to franco kernel self compiled
  • (Samsung Galaxy Tab) Reverted back to CM kernel
  • CM Gerritmerges as of Sun Sep 23 18:33:33 UTC 2012
  • New Calculator features
  • Added handling of vol rocker long press in camera
  • Changed USB connected icon to feature Cid
  • Center Clock option
  • Ability to enable navigation bar from settings
  • Left navigation bar in landscape mode option
  • Status bar can show both signal strength and network tech
  • Call log: Add lookup in Call logs
  • Added file explorer
  • Corrected Kernel string in Settings
  • Added fullscreen toggle to Browser (M)
  • Enable installing shortcuts in Trebuchet (M)
  • Tethering Fix (M)
  • Clock: Stopwatch and Countdown (M)
  • (Google Galaxy Nexys) Change USB On-the-Go mount point to /storage (M)

  • Mms: Only display template button if templates defined (M)
  • Mms: Add Template support to QuickMessage pop-up(M)
  • Torch: Modify widget to utilize AOSP power widget UI (M)
  • Variable size pattern in lock screen (M)
  • WebView: fix crash when moving cursor (M)
  • Advanced Phone Settings (M)
  • Control cursor in text fields with volume rocker (M)
  • Improve HttpResponseCache performance (M)
  • Quick message support in SMS (M)
  • Nfc card emulation (M)

The battery goes round and round

How much battery juice do you have left? I have 98%. Exactly.
I'm testing and uploading - but just to give you a taste:

Do you want the text centered?

Do you want just the text?

Or, of course, the circle battery?

I just merged AOKP battery styles into Sapir.
Build incoming soon.

Sapir - September 22nd

The build for the 22nd is finally here. There are warnings, so please read this post.

The main non-CM addition to the build is the transparent nav bar / status bar and I'll detail the full log after the two warnings.

First, for all builds, there seem to be an issue with CM merges that cause a problem with SuperUser. However, there's a very simple workaround for that. Simply download SuperSU, open it and let it replace the su binary.

The second warning is specific to the Galaxy Tab Build:
I won't repeat everything I already said - I kept the old partition layout, others didn't, I told you so, yada yada yada. ;)
The Galaxy Tab build will WIPE your data if you come from a Sapir build earlier than this one. It's not an arbitrary decision, this is done to maintain compatibility with CM10, when they return to this layout too.

But, worry not. Please follow the following procedure before installing:
  1. Perform nand backup from the recovery
  2. Install Sapir
  3. Install gapps
  4. Reboot
  5. Reboot to recovery
  6. Advance restore only data

I just tried it twice and it's working - you lose nothing at all.

Oh, and I've started releasing Sapir for the d2att (a.k.a. SGH-I747, a.k.a. AT&T Samsung Galaxy S III).

Now, for the full updated change log:

Housekeeping

I just saw that at least one of my users couldn't find the download links. Although I thought they were placed in a good spot, that probably was not the case. So, first item of housekeeping - I moved the links for the latest versions for all the devices to the top of the right side of your screen.

Those of you who have been following the Samsung Galaxy Tab version of Sapir probably know that I decided to stick with the "old" partition layout which allowed for a larger data partition - more space for your apps. This is still the case. But, as a second item of housekeeping, I wanted to make sure the ROM will retain compatibility to CM, wherever possible. This also means that anyone upgrading from a Sapir build prior to 20120922 will have to follow a short procedure if they want their data kept:
Before upgrading:

  1. Perform nand backup from the recovery
  2. Install Sapir
  3. Install gapps
  4. Reboot
  5. Reboot to recovery
  6. Advance restore "data only" from recovery

You won't need to do this in the future.

Last item of house keeping - a cleaner look to the status bar and the navigation bar. At the request of a user (ArtoD2), I've merged the transparent navigation bar mod.

There are a number of other additions and changes - all will be detailed soon in the release post.

Sapir - September 20th

I had a heck of a time uploading this time - not sure why.

The major changes:

  1. Reverted Galaxy Tab 7" kernel to CM.

A Kernel of Truth and a New Device

My beloved Galaxy Tab 7 (OG) was the original reason I started building Sapir, well - the second reason. The real first reason was a missing field in the email app in CM10.
I just couldn't get along with the fact that meeting times were usually missing from the invitation messages and I had to fix it.

Then, I decided to breathe some life into my old Samsung Galaxy Tab 7". Now - it's just like having a cheap, but useful, Nexus 7 wannabe. My users also seem happy with that and especially with the fact I decided to keep the partition layout.
But - a few days ago - the builds for the Galaxy Tab started to lose stability - at least for some users. As a developer, one of the most frustrating situations is not being able to reproduce bugs reported by your users. Before going into a real frenzy, though, I'm simply going to dump the biggest change - I'm going to revert to CM kernel and see if the stability returns.

Worry not, this is only applicable to the GT builds, not to the other devices.

And now, speaking of devices, I just got the AT&T variant of the Samsung Galaxy S III - so my Galaxy Nexus is going to lie low for a while. I just built a Sapir for that - but it's still missing the camera stuff, so I'd wait a bit if I were you.

Builds are running as I write, so nightlies are coming soon.

New Build

New builds are coming out.
I've started uploading them to goo, and will soon update the threads.

Not too much changed in the new builds. Most changes are from the gerrit.
Today I moved the non official kernels outside of the build tree, to better control the timing of the updates. This goes for both franco for the Google Galaxy Nexus and well as for humberos for the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

As told, I'm still concentrating on "internal" changes - stabilising and enhancing performance.
The latest build, by the way, was the first to feature all three navigation bar changes:

  1. Enable / Disable navigation bar.
  2. Customise navigation bars buttons (M)
  3. Left navigation bar when in landscape

Look to the sidebar for the releases themselves.

Updated change log:

  • Removed statistics collection from CM
  • Added DPI Changer in Display settings
  • *** (Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000) * Using old partition structure, so data partition is large enough for user applications *
  • (Google Galaxy Nexus) Changed to franco kernel self compiled
  • (Samsung Galaxy Tab) Changed to humberos kernel self compiled
  • CM Gerritmerges as of Wed Sep 19 18:40:37 UTC 2012

    Next in Line

As some of you may know, I almost lost my build environment.
Thankfully, though, I was able to recover it and continue the builds.
The last release saw a significant performance boost, thanks to the new init changes.

Keeping the "old" partition layout for the OG Galaxy Tab seems like a good decision - users are happy with it, and other ROMs may return to it sooner than expected.

    So - what's next?

Many of you have written that the DPI changer is a feature that should stay, and I agree - although it will be part of Flux in the future. However, Flux will take some time to ship, which means I need to work on more immediate changes, to keep Sapir a fresh ROM.

I may start with merging Tablet mode, but I'm currently debating other possible changes as well. Feel free to share your opinion in the threads or here.
