Tl;Dr: always used SwiftKey with my devices because Google keyboard sucked. Updated my phone to android 7.1.1 and Google keyboard absolutely rocks.

Ever since my first android phone (Galaxy S2 on android v2.3.4) I have used SwiftKey, an excellent alternative keyboard which really improved the typing experience, with excellent accuracy, predictions and customisation.

A few years ago,I bought a Nexus 7 tablet (2012 model) and I remember that the stock keyboard was not very good, however I do remember how nice it looked. I don't know why I liked it so much but it was fantastic. Ever since then, I've given the stock Google keyboard a try and I've never really liked it.

Now in to modern times with my Nexus 6P, I rooted it a month ago and stuck with Android V6, just because it worked well and I didn't want to lose root access. However, I learned about flash fire which means I can do android OTA updates without losing root access. So I decided to upgrade to Android V7.1.1. best choice I ever made!

With the new update, I decided to try Google keyboard yet again and good lord it has changed and it is so much better and behaves much like SwiftKey but it feels well optimised and works fantastically. Looks like I'll no longer need SwiftKey.

[DEV] kboard v3.0.0 - keyboard with VIM-like macros...is it useful?

Background:kboard has been around for a while now, it's a keyboard which allows for customisable one-click canned responses.

Recently I've found myself using the WhatsApp bold and italic syntax a fair amount, but it's quite cumbersome doing that with a normal keyboard, so wanted to see if I could make it easier.

In the process of doing that, I sort of ended up making a VIM-like syntax for kboard, that could be quite flexible.

Here are a few examples:

/Italicise Previous!dw,i($0)

/Bolden Previous!dw,i($0)

/Italics!i(__),j - this writes the two underscores then moves the cursor between them

/Copy All!yy

/Repeat word x4!dw,4p

/rly sad!1000i(đŸ˜„)

I'd love some feedback on whether this is actually useful to anyone other than myself - if so I can maybe spend a bit more time making it easier/better to use or adding new commands.

Full list so far:

  • d=delete previous character
  • dw=delete previous word
  • 3dw=delete previous three words
  • dd=delete all
  • yy=copy all
  • y=copy selection
  • p=paste from clipboard
  • i(text)=output the content of the brackets ($0 gets replaced * with the last deleted/copied content)
  • upper(text)=as o, but in upper case
  • lower(text)=as o, but lower case
  • j=move cursor back by a character
  • k=move cursor forward by a character
  • b=move cursor back by a word
  • w=move cursor forward by a word
  • s=trigger a send command

Why doesn't Google offer some kind of "keep in memory" mode?

Most apps nowadays don't get kicked out of memory because hardware memory is increasing, but still, there are instances like in my case where a app will be pushed out of memory unless there is a persistent notification because i have low ram. Wouldn't it be better to add a "pinned" mode where apps that are "pinned as system app" doesn't get pushed out of memory or at least is the last app to be pushed out of memory or maybe even a swipe gesture that separates persistent notifications and regular notifications.
