Given the recent issues with Pixels and 6Ps shutting down early, there seems to be a lot of confusion about what's causing the problem, so I figure it makes sense to explain the technical issues a bit:

Think of a battery as a water tank that looks like this:

The tank has a certain volume (capacity), a certain pressure that depends on the water level inside (voltage) and depending on what the valve is like, it can deliver a certain amount of flow (current).

Because the valve will restrict the flow a bit, there's a pressure drop across the valve. The higher the flow rate, the more the valve acts like a bottle neck.

Now, as the battery ages, it will start to look more like this:

The capacity is still the same, the pressure is still the same, but the valve now restricts the flow to a much greater degree. The same thing happens with batteries as they age, because their internal resistance increases and their ability to deliver high current suffers. If you're taking a shower and your hot water tank looks like this, there's going to be significant pressure drop at the shower head if someone else in the house turns on a tap somewhere.

Again, the same thing happens with batteries. If you've got a battery with a high internal resistance and a power-hungry load like the camera demanding a lot of current, other devices like the processor will see their supply voltage drop, and if it drops low enough, the phone will shut off. That's what's going on when a phone turns off with 40% battery left. There's plenty of water in the tank, but all the build-up inside the valve restricts the flow so much that the pressure takes a nosedive.

Aside from general wear, temperature also has a major impact on the internal resistance of the battery. A battery is an electrochemical energy storage device, and low temperatures slow down the chemical processes happening inside of it. That's why early shutdown problems happen more often in cold weather. In addition to a partially blocked valve you also have partially frozen pipes that restrict the flow of water even more.

TL;DR: Early shutdowns are a result of high internal resistance of the battery, and high internal resistance is due to battery wear and low temps.

Hello r/android! :)

It's been a while since my previous post here.

I'm not sure if this post is violating any terms, but if it is, feel free to downvote/delete it.

I made http://ok-google.io a while ago - a website that lists all the voice commands for "Google Now" in an interactive and dynamic way.

Since I launched the site there have been many updates, new commands, and 2 new platforms for voice interaction were launched: Google Home and Google Assistant.

I would love to continue working on the website and release v2 which will include:

Support for different platforms (Phone, Wear, Home, Assistant)
Commands available per language and per country
A weekly/monthly newsletter that will notify users of commands in the language & platform(s) they're interested in.
Command builder: An easier way to suggest a missing command, including dynamic words and random data
Voting system & sorting commands by votes
And many many new features and improvements!

In order for me to take time from my regular work and work on this project full-time, I would need some sponsorship for:

Development of the project for at least few months
Buying Google Home and Google Pixel

Some people suggested ads for monetization but I think that will ruin the website, so I don't want to do it.

If you or someone else that you know would like to sponsor the project, just let me know.

I'm not sure if Google would be interested in sponsoring it, because, after all, it's for promoting their own products. Does anyone know who should I contact?

ProjectFi Customer Service Has Been Pretty Great So Far.

I was a bit concerned when jumping over to Google for phone service, but the customer service options through the ProjectFi app are pretty awesome. I've used all 3 (phone, email, and chat).

Today, I dialed up the chat to ask about the 7.1.1 rollout and I was answered within a minute.

I may come off as a shill, but I figured some people may wonder how well Google is doing with customer service with the ProjectFi product.

I used to be really excited about upcoming android phones like the Droid Incredible (forever ago), HTC One, Nexus 4, Nexus 5, and OPO (my current phone). But lately I'm just not excited about any phone. There are phones that look good and I know I would probably like, but nothing really excites me right now.

Anyone have a phone (now or in the future) that you're actually excited about?
