My first smartphone. A few questions

My first smartphone. A few questions

Posted: 25 Dec 2016 01:09 PM PST

Hello,

my sister got a new phone so she gave me her old one. It's a Samsung Galaxy Ace 4. I have absolutely no experience with smartphones. On the other hand I am quite experienced with computers and since I am performace freak, I would like to know few things. So here goes:

1) Antivirus - If I stick to Google Play and such, basically all the thrustworthy sites, I don't need one right? Just basic common sense like when you're on a PC, don't browse porn etc...Right?

2) Various CC cleaners (which I know are bullshit on PC). Do I need one? Based on what I've read, it seems to be the same scam as on the PC.

3) Power saving apps. Do they work? ...aaand and what measures can I take to save battery power? Obviously low display brightness and disabled sound. What else?

4) Transfering Files into the phone - Do I need some software on my PC or can I just connect it via USB and put shit into the folders? Btw I'm talking only about videos, music and pictures, I don't really care about anything else.

5) My Samsung Ace 4 has Android 4.4.4 (Kitkat - very old) can I upgrade (and for god sakes how?:( ) to newer version? There has been articles about Samsung not going to "allow/support" newer versions of Android for this phone, while other articles seem to say otherwise.

6) Is there a way to completely wipe the phone clean? Like format a hard drive on a PC? Just start from the scratch...

7) How much of a bad impact (performance wise) installing and uninstalling lot of apps has? PC's hate it.

8) I rooted my phone after doing some reading. What features can I acces now?

I guess that will be all for now. Thank you and Merry Christmas.

Is there an app/task that warns about leaving Bluetooth headsets behind?

Posted: 25 Dec 2016 12:07 PM PST

I keep mine around my neck but I dropped them the other day. So is there an app that sets off a warning sound if the phone and earphones get disconnected? (As opposed to turning off the headsets).

I tried to create a Tasker task but I don't know what I'm doing.

Google Pixel: Good choice?

Posted: 25 Dec 2016 05:58 AM PST

I get to choose a new phone for my plan tomorrow and I have been considering the Google Pixel.

I've either heard that they're fantastic or very defected, especially the lens flare in the camera. Can anyone vouch for or against one, whether personally owning one or knowing someone who has?

Also how is the battery life on them?

I'm switching over from HTC One M9.

How would I root my Verizon Ellipsis 8 HD (2016) Tablet?

Posted: 25 Dec 2016 11:14 AM PST

I recently got a Verizon Ellipsis 8 HD, and I can not find anything online about how to root it. The only results that show up are regarding either the Ellipsis 7 or the Ellipsis 8 2014 model. The model number is QTASUN1, it has android 6.0.1, September 1st security patch, and build MMB29M. If there's anything else that would be helpful if be happy to find it,

Posted: 25 Dec 2016 12:01 PM PST

Hello r/androidquestions. I am currently using a used Galaxy S4 which has a small flaw. The sim-slot is having trouble recognizing the Sim every few minutes/hours. I don't care that much about a few seconds downtime but the problem is:

the Galaxy S4 opens up a window which instructs me to insert a Sim card and then it forces a restart. Can i stop this window from appearing? Thank you guys for any response

Android Keyboard Issues

Posted: 25 Dec 2016 11:43 AM PST

When trying to type quickly, the first letter of my word(s) will get deleted.

I start typing "this is a text message" and end up with "his is a ext essage" and then sometimes autocorrects get inserted.

I have watched and made sure I am touching each key and even seen the letter show up on the text field just to be replaced with the next letter I type.

I have been using Google Keyboard on my past 4 phones and even on my V20 this is an issue. I wiped the data and reconfigures the keyboard and disabled Gylde, predicted text, suggestions, etc and it was good for a few days then it started again.

I see there are other posts about this with other keyboards and going back a few years, I just can't find out why or a fix. If I slow down and type slower then it isnt a problem

Affordable bluetooth controller

Posted: 25 Dec 2016 02:16 PM PST

Hello can you recommend me a good but affordable bluetooth controller for my G3? I need it to be less than 20$. I started playing emulator games (snes and ps1) and i quickly realized that playing would be much easier with a controller. I'm looking for one with a phone holder if possible. Thanks!

Help this Apple fan find an Android tablet for the in-laws!

Posted: 25 Dec 2016 11:06 AM PST

Happy Christmas /r/AndroidQuestions, and greetings from an Apple fan!

My in-laws have got a bit of money for Christmas, and they want to buy a tablet. But I don't think their budget will stretch to an iPad, and I don't know enough about Android tablets to know where to start. So I'm looking for suggestions.

Their main requirement is to use Facebook. They might do some light web browsing too. They are in their late 50s, with no real experience of technology. They both have slight eyesight issues - not enough to need anything special to use a screen, but they want at least a 9-inch screen so they can see it clearly.

The main priority is usability.

A nice-to-have bonus feature would be separate logins for each user so they each have easy access to their own Facebook account, etc, but this is by no means essential.

Their budget is very flexible. They initially said £250 GBP, but they didn't baulk too much at the idea of spending £350 GBP.

Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

Does the app 360 Security actually help speed up your phone?

Posted: 25 Dec 2016 02:08 PM PST

I'm wondering if the app 360 Security actually helps in speeding up your phone and/or getting rid of background processes that drain your battery. Or will it just run in the background lowering my battery life and performance?

Reboot without the power button

Posted: 25 Dec 2016 12:58 PM PST

The power button to my HTC One M9 stopped working today. I'm trying to solve it by rebooting the phone but can't get to the "power off-screen" due to the button not working. There seems to be some alternatives on the Play Store but all requires root.

How can I reboot my phone / fix my power button?

Galaxy S3 not letting me setup a new Device

Posted: 25 Dec 2016 09:58 AM PST

So I got a Moto Z Play Droid (Verizon) today and I'm in the process of setting up the phone. I wanted to copy my data from my Galaxy S3 (Verizon) but due to an aftermarket battery in the S3, it doesn't have NFC. So I go into google settings and when I hit the "Set up new Android device button" google play services crashes and google settings restarts.

I've tried going to stock google services and updating to the latest version and that hasn't worked. I also tried to boot it in safe mode and it still crashes.

LG G5 Possible virus, help needed.

Posted: 25 Dec 2016 03:51 PM PST

Hello, so I've got an LG G5 in the family with an annoying problem. So here's some back story.

A message was received with a link to some sort of Snapchat link (?) and after that, a pop up has been non-stop appearing that says com.android.phone has stopped.

Every time I click okay, the popup comes back. It's impossible to do anything on the phone.

Where the carrier logo should be says service disabled.

Anytime a call is received, the calling app closes and anytime I open the SMS app it immediate closes with the popup.

Anything I can do to fix this? It's very annoying and I need to use the phone.

Google Play Account Help

Posted: 25 Dec 2016 11:12 AM PST

So I have two google play accounts, one that I mainly use and one that I don't often use. I just loaded $100 dollars of google play gift cards onto the one that I do not normally use by accident. Now I want to buy some hearthstone packs and for some reason it wants to use the credit card on my main account rather than the credit on the secondary account. Is there a way to switch which account purchases are taken from?

New Nvidia shield, couple questions.

Posted: 25 Dec 2016 10:16 AM PST

Family just got a nvidia shield tablet for Christmas. As myself my wife and daughter will all be using it.

Couple questions. Can anyone recommend a durable case /cover as a little kid will be using it at times.

And secondly is there a way to get some apps I've purchased on my phone onto the tablet (a couple games, etc.) without linking it directly to my google account. As it will be a shared tablet I don't want /need my personal email linked to it.

We'll create a family google account for the tablet.

Thanks in advance and merry Christmas everyone!

How do I individually send a message to multiple people?

Posted: 25 Dec 2016 09:17 AM PST

[LG G5] The current screen is transparent, leaving the previous one visible through it. I need a fix for this transparency.

Posted: 25 Dec 2016 08:59 AM PST

LG G5 running Android 7.0. I had this problem before the 7 update.

Here's a screenshot, but it does not show the issue. Imagine seeing the keyboard at like 10% transparency overlaid on that.

GS5 File Retrieval

Posted: 25 Dec 2016 08:25 AM PST

I broke the display on my Samsung GS5 and there are files on it that I need to put on my laptop. Is there any way I can get them off using a USB or some file reader program? The carrier I have is Sprint, and I haven't really tried anything so far since I don't want to mess it up.
