Weekly Questions Thread - December 26, 2016

Posted: 26 Dec 2016 04:13 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we suggest checking the sidebar, the wiki, or Stack Overflow before posting). Examples of questions:

  • How do I pass data between my Activities?
  • Does anyone have a link to the source for the AOSP messaging app?
  • Is it possible to programmatically change the color of the status bar without targeting API 21?

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Large code snippets don't read well on reddit and take up a lot of space, so please don't paste them in your comments. Consider linking Gists instead.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/androiddev mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Also, please don't link to Play Store pages or ask for feedback on this thread. Save those for the App Feedback threads we host on Saturdays.

Making modifications to Google's Messenger app

Posted: 26 Dec 2016 10:33 AM PST

I'd like to clone Google's Messenger app and add in a custom functionality that I've been thinking about building for a while. I traced their git repo back to here, but whenever I try to load it into AndroidStudio I get errors because it's not using the Gradle system. I'm also unable to compile it because certain dependencies are allegedly missing or not linked.

I'm fairly new to Android development but do have a background in programming. Can anyone point me in the right direction for how to get started on this?

Also, if I do get it to work, is it okay to share on the Play Store? Is Google's Messenger app open source?

Question regarding licensing and a project on GitHub

Posted: 26 Dec 2016 04:13 PM PST

Hey all,

I've been working on a project and I've been making steady commits. As of right now, it is a private repo.

This is just a project for learning at this point, and I don't have plans to upload it to Google Play.

However, I want to make the project public so I have something to show off on my GitHub profile when the time comes.

However, if I want to upload this to Google Play at a later date, how would licensing go? Is there a specific license a need to choose or what have you?

So I guess my concern is making the repo public while still having the option to upload it to Google Play at a later date. I suppose someone could rip it off anyways (as I see here commonly), but maybe there is something I'm missing?

(Sorry in advance for the noob question...)

Which sites do you recommend for Android emulator/device testing?

Posted: 26 Dec 2016 01:25 AM PST

I need to test my app on as many devices as possible, which sites or services would you recommend for this? Preferably real devices and not emulators. I am using testobject, but they offer only a few devices for free, otherwise they are quite expensive for my current situation. Maybe there is something you guys would recommend. Thanks.

Is there a detailed document on how bitmaps and drawables work?

Posted: 26 Dec 2016 02:13 PM PST

I've read this https://developer.android.com/training/displaying-bitmaps/load-bitmap.html and numerous other articles but feel just as confused as when I started. Are there any other documents that explain how one can avoid out of memory exceptions due to loading images?

Requesting advise regarding app development

Posted: 26 Dec 2016 01:29 PM PST

Hello fellow Android devs,

I'll keep this as short as I can, but I'm in a troublesome situation right now.

I started Android development in 2014 and I've been developing on and off ever since, I made a lot of tiny apps from different tutorials but nothing of my own ideas.

Then came my current project, at first I thought "oh I'm just going to make this thing", then I finished it but didn't feel like releasing it, then I was like "if I added this thing to it then I can finally publish it" and so on and so forth.

As things stand, I'm extremely discouraged, this app seems like it will take me 6+ months to get it to my liking, I go to school for CS so I barely have time to develop more than 2 hours a day.

So, I've poured months of my life into this single app, I can't release it in its current state, and I don't have anything to show for it, especially for interviews and my resume.

I don't have other projects, I want to finish this one so I can start on smaller projects, I want to focus on breadth instead of depth so I want to create small apps and programs that showcase a new technology.

So my question is, what should I do?

1- I can revert my code base to the original idea and scrape the extra fluff, the app is really useless this way, think API consumption and basic CRUD.

2- Postpone development and move on to other ideas to fluff up my resume.

3- ?????

Like I said, I have learned a lot but I don't have anything tangible to show future employers, I've wasted a lot of time trying to materialize my vision of this app and I don't know if I'm going down the wrong path or if I should just keep grinding..

Any advice is much appreciated.

Edit: advice* not advise in title.

[Help] How to make a "smart" bot?

Posted: 26 Dec 2016 09:31 AM PST

I'm trying to make a "smart" bot for my Android that has all the features of a regular bot (inputs, pauses, etc.) but can wait for items/images to appear/disappear on screen. I also want it to trigger a certain macro if a certain image appears on the screen).

What are some tools I can use for this?

Thanks in advance!

What kind of menu should I use for a huge list of options?

Posted: 26 Dec 2016 08:57 AM PST

I need a menu for over 60 options and each option will have a sub-menu of 20-30 options. Looking at the menu documentation, I'm having trouble discerning whether I need a context menu or popup menu. Ideally, I would like to have two side-by-side menu panels, the first showing the main options and the second showing the sub-menu for each option. What would be my best option for this?

[Petty Rant/Vent] As a newbie to Android - dev, I hate SQLite

Posted: 26 Dec 2016 11:27 AM PST

Please tell me struggling with this portion of Android is normal, PLEASE.

This has got to be the most annoying thing I've ever encountered in programming (Though given me being a noob, worse stuff is probably still up ahead).

The syntax is weird and confusing, especially when trying to use the libraries given. Oh, you need to enclose all your variables in single quotes or the command won't do jack shit. Didn't work? Don't worry! We've decided NOT TO INCLUDE ANY SORT OF HELPFUL NOTIFICATION. That way, you can close the entire ADB to open up DDMS to extract your database to diagnose for an anomaly in your DB that doesn't exist, only for you to repeat the cycle again!

Also, we'll automatically cast whatever data type in Java you have to our own. Good-fucking-luck testing for WHERE clauses with numerical data values , sucka!

Don't forget, we know that your hands are your greatest asset as a programmer, so we decided to include a shitton of boilerplate for you to type! SWOLE FINGERS FOR EVARYWAN!!!

End rant, this is probably really petty, but I just wanted to let that out.

P.S. Fuck SQLite, just, fuck that thing.
