Nexus 5 made by LG and powered by Android 4.4 KitKat to be launched on 30th October, to come with MEMS operated 8MP Camera

Google Nexus 5 is the next launch in the Nexus range and will be launched in conjunction with the Nexus 10.  The Nexus 5 will be made by LG and will sport Android 4.4 KitKat operating system.  It will have 4.97 inch full HD display with a 1920 x 1080 resolution and pixel density of ~442 ppi.  It will be powered by a quad-core Snapdragon SoC 800 processor.  Nexus will also have 2GB RAM and 16GB inbuilt memory.   The details about expandable memory are not known.  For connectivity it will come with NFC, Wi-Fi, LTE, 3G and bluetooth.

The unique thing about Nexus 5 is that it will feature MEMS 8MP camera on the rear for the first time, which will give you ultra fast focussing capability and Lytro like focussing.  The front camera will be 1.2MP affair.

A little bit about the MEMS which is being used for the first time in the camera.  MEMS stands for microelectromechanical system. Basically this means that the Nexus 5 will have small or micro electro and mechanical parts on its camera which will allow a user to take ultra fast focused images.

MEMS works using the micro moving parts which are usually made from silicon, polymer, or ceramics which are actuated with effects such as piezoelectricity, electrostatics, and wetting. To give you a better idea of the sheer miniaturisation of parts, the individual components that go into the making of MEMS can sometimes be at a fraction of a  millimetre while the whole contraption can be of 1Sqmm in size.    In the current technology scenario the MEMS technology is used in many products.  For example your every day Inkjet printers use piezoelectric MEMS to dispense tiny dots of ink on paper. The gyroscope and other sensors in your smartphone also make use of MEMS.   And as per the leaked log of the Nexus 5's device boot process, it seems that the Nexus 5 will use the IMX179 MEMS camera module from DigitalOptics.

MEMS if successful will be the future of cameras on the smart phones in coming years.

16GB Nexus 5 to be available in India on 18th November, 2013 for Rs.29990.00, 32GB version to be released later
