How To Reset a Windows 8 Password

How To Reset a Windows 8 Password

haw to reset your Windows 8 password?. In fact, as long as you can closely follow the detailed instructions outlined below, it's not even that difficult.

The "hack" outlined below is harmless and works very well but it's not exactly Microsoft-sanctioned. Ideally you'd use a Windows 8 password reset disk haw to reset your Windows 8 password. Unfortunately, the only way to use one of those is if you had the forethought to create one before forgetting your password! I do recommend you make one as soon as you get back in (see Step 10 below).
Important: The Windows 8 password reset trick below only works if you're using a local account. If you use an email address to logon to Windows 8 then you're not using a local account, you're using a Microsoft account, and you should follow my How To Reset Your Microsoft Account Password tutorial instead.
Some other ways also exist to recover or reset a forgotten Windows 8 password, like using password recovery software. See my Help! I Forgot My Windows 8 Password! for the full list of ideas.
Follow these easy steps to reset your Windows 8 password:
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: Considering that there are several steps involved, it might take up to an hour to reset your Windows 8 password.
Applies To: You can reset your Windows 8 password this way no matter what edition of Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 you're using.
Here's How:

Access Advanced Startup Options. In Windows 8, all of the important diagnostic and repair options available to you can be found on the Advanced Startup Options (ASO) menu.

Important: There are six ways to access the ASO menu, all described in the link above, but some are only available if you can already get into Windows 8, which you can't do since you don't know the password. I recommend following Method 4, which requires that you have a Windows 8 setup disc or flash drive, or Method 5, which requires that you have, or create, a Windows 8 Recovery Drive. Method 6 works too, if your computer supports it.
Touch or click on Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, and finally Command Prompt.
Now that Command Prompt is open, type the following command:
```
copy c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe c:\
```
...and then press Enter. You should see a 1 file(s) copied confirmation.
Next, type this command, again followed by Enter:
```
copy c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe
```
Answer with Y or Yes to question about the overwrite of the utilman.exe file. You should now see another file copy confirmation.
Remove any flash drives or discs that you may have booted from in Step 1 and then restart your computer.
Once the Windows 8 logon screen is available, click the Ease of Access icon at the bottom-left corner of the screen. Command Prompt should now open.

What?! Command Prompt? That's right! The changes you made in Step 3 & 4 above replaced the Ease of Access tools with Command Prompt (don't worry, you'll reverse these changes in Step 11). Now that you have access to a command line, you can reset your Windows 8 password.
Next you need to execute the net user command as shown below, replacing myusername with your user name, and mynewpassword with the password you'd like to begin using:
```
net user myusername mynewpassword
```
For example, on my computer, I would execute the command like this:
```
net user "Tim Fisher" a@rdvarksar3skarY
```
Note: You only need to use double quotes around your username if it happens to have a space in it.

Tip: If you get a The user name could not be found message, execute net user to see the list of Windows 8 users on the computer for reference and then try again with a valid username. A System error 8646 / The system is not authoritative for the specified account... message indicates that you're using a Microsoft account to login to Windows 8, not a local account. See the Important call-out in the introduction at the top of this page for more on that.
Close Command Prompt.
Login with the new password you set in Step 7!
Now that your Windows 8 password has been reset and you're back in, either create a Windows 8 password reset disk or switch your local account to a Microsoft account. No matter which you choose, you'll finally have legitimate, and much easier to use, Windows 8 password reset options.
Finally, you should reverse the hack that makes this password reset trick work in Windows 8. To do that, repeat Steps 1 & 2 above.

Once Command Prompt is open again, execute this command:
```
copy c:\utilman.exe c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe
```
Confirm the overwriting by answering Yes and then restart your computer.

How to uninstall programs-install programs on your Mac

Best way to uninstall programs or apps on mac

The best way is to contact the developers site for uninstall instructions, especially if the software required you to enter your Admin password to install.

It might have placed "hooks" into the OS X kernel called kext files that load when OS X boots up or in other locations that require a uninstaller to use root level power to uninstall correctly.

If one simply only drags the application icon they see in their Applications or Utilities folder to the Trash, what happens is these leftover parts in OS X itself don't get updated for compatibility with later OS X updates and/or might cause a security or stability issue later on which the machine will boot to a "Gray Screen Issue" and remain stuck.

Self contained programs/apps

If the developer then says it's perfectly fine to drag the application icon located in the Applications or Applications > Utilities folder to the Trash, then you can do that. These types of programs are what we call "self contained" meaning everything it pretty much requires is inside the Application icon which is really a hidden folder called a "package".

Since "self contained" programs or apps can be run from just about anywhere they are placed, like in User Account folders so only that User can run them, however for global use amongst all User Accounts on the machine and in most cases of installers, they are stored in the Applications and/or Applications > Utilities folder.

Keep your Downloads folder clear

It is not advised to keep downloaded programs in the Downloads folder, rather to keep this clear at all times except during a known active download as to be wary of bad websites that will cause a "driveby download" hoping one will click or run to infect their machine. The Downloads folder is not a storage place, rather if you wish to keep a installer, place it someplace else in your User folders, like creating a folder called "Installers" or "Downloaded PDFs" and keeping them in your Utilities or Documents folders in your Home directory.

Concerning appdelete/appremoval type software

It is not advised to use "appdelete" type programs for the fact that there are hundreds of thousands of programs/apps and developers changing them all the time, thus it's almost impossible to keep up with all the changes. So as a result many of these appdelete type programs rely upon using a search feature and hoping the developer tagged their files with a name to locate files, which is not always the case. Accidents occur as users of these type programs delete other files or not get all parts installed by the developer.

Many developers use other developers software, like Pace for copy protection or Soundflower for a audio driver, when they install their software, thus the appdelete type software misses these files installed in the OS X kernel which then later get outdated or have security issues that are not fixed as the parent program is missing that does the updates.

Installing programs or apps

When you click a link on a website to download, it appears in your Downloads folder which you open that and then the DMG volume that appears on the Desktop (if it has one) and doublelclick the installer (if it says it is) or drag the self contained program to your Applications or Applications > Utilities folder.

Then from there you drag it's icon to the Dock to make a "Alias" or shortcut so you don't have to dig inside the Applications folder to find it. Click on the Dock Alias to launch the program.

Installers are not usually kept on the Dock, rather once the program is installed the Installer is either Trashed or saved someplace else out of the Downloads folder to keep it clear to watch for malicous downloads. Rather the program installed is kept a Alias in the Dock as that's what is going to be used, not the one time installer package.

About Gatekeeper

For OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion" users and above, Apple installed restrictions on where you can download and install software onto your machine. So if you go to a website and see something you like to install, Apple will prevent you from running the program and/or installer. The default security settings in your System Preferences > Security > General for downloads is set by default for "AppStore" and "Apple signed developers" only.

The intention of Gatekeeper is to prevent less savvy users from installing untrusted software, it has a side benefit of causing users to erroneously think AppStore is the only place to install software on their machine, thus Apple benefits by making a commission on each sale of AppStore software.

AppStore software has particular limitations placed on the developers on what they can do with their software. Some developers have a AppStore "hobbled" version as well as a fully featured version if downloaded from their own website. AppStore software also is severely delayed in getting security and stability updates as Apple takes it upon itself to review each and every version. So for faster updates, it's likely best to use the developers version from their website.

If you trust the source or location where your downloading and installing software from other than Apple signed developers or AppStore, then your free to bypass Gatekeepers strict restrictions by holding the Control key down or Right Clicking on the Program, App or Installer to run it. Once it's known as a "trusted app" it will not bother you again about running it, provided it doesn't show up as know malicious program.

Warning! Contrary to the popular belief saying "If you don't give it your Admin password it can't do anything" is not entirely true. Simply running a malicious program in any user account can cause damage, it just can't as quickly gain root access to do the most damage right away, it certainly can encrypt your files or delete them, or install a keystroke logger and communicate that over the Internet, alter other applications and install a bigger payload of itself later.

The Dock

The Dock doesn't contain real programs, those are what's called "Aliases" or Windows users would know as "Shortcuts" which direct to the actual program, file or folders located elsewhere. To show the location of the real item in the Dock, right click and select Open > Show in Finder. The item there is the real thing, that's what is dragged to the Trash to delete (then Finder > Empty Trash to permanently delete it).

To delete the icon off the Dock, merely drag it's icon off onto the Desktop area and release, it does a puffy smoke thing and disappears.

If you see a question mark icon in the Dock, that means there is a Alias that doesn't know where the original file is located, likely the original file was moved or deleted. Thus when clicked changes to a question mark like it's asking "Where is it?". To remove the question mark, simply drag it off the Dock onto the Desktop and release.

To place a mistakenly deleted Alias off the Dock back on or to place a new Alias on the Dock, locate it by clicking on the Smiley Face in the Dock to open a new Finder window, then navigate to it's actual location and drag it's original item into the Dock until it makes room and release. If you accidentally drop the icon on the Desktop, place it back in it's original location first, then attempt the Dock again.

Some items dragged to the Dock like folders and files will only fit on the Dock down near the Trash Can area, be careful not to place the original item into the Trash and then Finder > Empty Trash as it will then be gone!

Rather double click on the Trash Can to open it and drag the misplaced items back to their original location before trying the Dock Alias attempt again.

The default install of Windows XP includes features and processes most users don't need. If you're involved in gaming or multimedia, and you can't afford a top-of-the-range PC, here are a few tips to get the most out of your machine.

For beginner users:

1. Go to: Start > Control Panel > Display > Settings.

Select: Resolution 800 x 600 pixels and Colour Quality Medium (16 bit).

Click: Apply.

What it does: Reduces system overhead. Less work for your CPU.

2. Go to: Start.

Right click: My Computer.

Select: Properties > 'Advanced' tab > Performance > 'Settings' button > 'Visual effects' tab.

Select: Adjust for best performance.

Click: Apply.

What it does: Removes unimportant cosmetic effects, thereby reducing system overhead.

3. Go to: Start.

Right click: My Computer.

Select: Properties > 'Advanced' tab > Performance > 'Settings' button > 'Advanced' tab.

Select: Processor scheduling > Programs.

Select: Memory usage > Programs.

Click: Apply.
What it does: Prioritises _your_ programs over those that windows xp _thinks_ are important.

4. Go to: Start > Control Panel > Display > Themes.

Select: Windows Classic.

Click: Apply.

What it does: Cleans up the desktop.

5. Go to: Start > Control Panel > Display > Desktop.

Select: Background - None.

Click: Apply.

What it does: Cleans up the desktop.

6. Go to: Start > Control Panel > Display > Appearance.

Select: Windows Classic Style.

Click: Apply.

What it does: Cleans up the desktop.

For Medium Users:

7. Go to: Start.

Right click: My Computer.

Select: Properties > 'Automatic Updates' tab.

Select: Turn off automatic updates.

Click: Apply.

What it does: Stops Microsoft messing with your computer at inconvenient times. You can re-enable this when _you_ feel like an update.

8. Go to: Start > Run.

Type: msconfig

Select: 'Startup' tab.

Action: Untick all boxes, except those you are certain you need to start when windows XP boots up.

Click: Apply.

What it does: Stops programs starting when windowsxp does. Frees up system resources.

For Advanced users:

9. Run your favourite program.

Click these buttons on your keyboard simultaneously: ctrl + alt + del (Control + Alt + Delete).

Click: 'Processes' tab.

Right click: The process of your favourite program.

Select: Set priority > Realtime.

What it does: Diverts CPU resources to the selected program.

10. Go to: Start > Run.

Type: services.msc

Right click: Any service you are sure you won't need, like 'Automatic Updates', 'Help and Support' or 'Indexing Services'.

Select: Properties > 'General' tab > Startup type > 'Manual' or 'Disabled'.

Click: Apply.

What it does: Stops processes starting windows XP does. Frees up system resources.

Warning: Change one setting here a day. Reboot your system after each one. Run your most popular programs. If they're running normally, try disabling another service the next day. This is to make sure you don't turn off something important. If you're not sure, leave them alone.

Run Backtrack 5 On Android Devices

Description: Backtrack is a very popular linux distribution for penetration testing. It has hundreds of tools for pentesting and hacking. Now a version of backtrack is available for arm processor devices. Normally android based mobile devices uses arm processor so we can install arm version of backtrack on android devices.
This video explains very clearly step by step method of installing process of arm version of backtrack on android devices. Following are the steps and utility for the installation process.
1. Download terminal emulator,android vnc and arm version of backtrack.
2. Extract the content of img file and transfer it in to memory of android devices.
3. Install BusyBox and start it.
4. Open terminal emulator. use "cd" command to get in backtrack directory where extracted content is saved on memory card of device. In this case command is
cd /sdcard/BT5
5. Type "sh bootbt" and we will be in Backtrack.

Once it's done, open Linux Installer again, and click on launch, you'll get a screen that looks like this: If it didn't recognize any distro, click on Setting > Edit then change the file path there to your backtrack image, the .img file that you extracted. When it finally say "backtrack" on the drop down list, click "Start Linux" Terminal Emulator will open, you just have to proceed with the installation steps, ask you for a new password, and some preferences. When it's done you will get a red "root@localhost~#" like the picture bellow: You are now in backtrack! Now if you want backtrack in GUI, open Google play, and install Android VNC: Open It when it finishes installing, and it will look like this: Set to the same settings in the picture, but not the IP address, you can get your IP by opening backtrack terminal, in terminal emulator, and running "ifconfig" command: Settings for VNC are, Username: backtrack Password: backtrac IP: from the "ifconfig" command or just put 127.0.0.1 Color Format: 24-bit Now click connect, and boom! You'r in backtrack Desktop! ;) When you finis using it, remember to disconnect VNC AND exit backtrack in Terminal Emulator, else it will be taking your battery in the background. And note that Ubuntu can be installed in the same exact way, just the username and password for VNC will change. Hello guys, today I'm going to show you the easiest way to install backtrack on an android device. For this tutorial you need: Rooted android device Linux installer (Can be found on Google play) Zarchiver (Can be found on Google play) Busybox (Can be found on Google play) Android-VNC (Can be found on Google play) Terminal Emulator (Can be found on Google play) All of the programs mentioned above are free. Ok, now let's start, The first thing you need to do is install Busybox from Google play: Install it, then open it when it's done, it will install some more things. When it's done, install Linux Installer from Google Play: Open Linux installer, then click on Install Guides from the list on your right hand side: When you click that, you'll see a list of Linux distros, click on Backtrack and you will see a screen with steps on how to install it. Now click on the second page of those steps, you will get a page that looks like this: Just click on "Download Image", and let it finish downloading. While it's downloading, open Google play and install Terminal Emulator, and Zarchiver. Terminal Emulator: Zarchiver: When it finishes downloading, open Zarchiver, and look for the ZIP file that you downloaded, and extraxt the image into a root folder called "backtrack", extract the image into an external memory card not the internal one. Once it's done, open Linux Installer again, and click on launch, you'll get a screen that looks like this: If it didn't recognize any distro, click on Setting > Edit then change the file path there to your backtrack image, the .img file that you extracted. When it finally say "backtrack" on the drop down list, click "Start Linux" Terminal Emulator will open, you just have to proceed with the installation steps, ask you for a new password, and some preferences. When it's done you will get a red "root@localhost~#" like the picture bellow: You are now in backtrack! Now if you want backtrack in GUI, open Google play, and install Android VNC: Open It when it finishes installing, and it will look like this: Set to the same settings in the picture, but not the IP address, you can get your IP by opening backtrack terminal, in terminal emulator, and running "ifconfig" command: Settings for VNC are, Username: backtrack Password: backtrac IP: from the "ifconfig" command or just put 127.0.0.1 Color Format: 24-bit Now click connect, and boom! You'r in backtrack Desktop! ;) When you finis using it, remember to disconnect VNC AND exit backtrack in Terminal Emulator, else it will be taking your battery in the background. And note that Ubuntu can be installed in the same exact way, just the username and password for VNC will change.

How to Format a Laptop Hard Drive

Formatting a hard drive is necessary after buying an extra or replacement drive or when a virus or bad file corrupts the drive in your computer. Formatting is needed for drives used by all computers, but this article will only tell you how to format a laptop hard drive.

Windows OS

Go to your laptop manufacturer's website and locate updated drivers you will need. These can usually be found on support and/or download pages.
Download the latest drivers available for your laptop for the specific operating system you want to install. If necessary, you can use a different computer to access these files.
Put the driver files onto an external storage device such as a CD or USB drive, because these drivers will be erased from the hard drive when you go to format it.
Insert a Windows installation or recovery CD into your CD-Rom drive. Restart your computer by selecting the "Restart" option on the "Turn off Computer" tab.
Consult your owner's manual for the location of your "access" key, because the location varies between brands.
Press the access key while the machine is restarting to reach the BIOS setup in your laptop. Sometimes the timing can be tricky, so start hitting the indicated key as soon as the computer restarts.
- Check your BIOS settings to confirm your CD-Rom drive is your primary booting device. If needed, select that option and press "Save." Your laptop should then restart.
Wait for your laptop to start in Windows installation/recovery mode.
Select "Format" and "Use NTFS File System" for the type of partitioning it needs. This format is the most compatible with the latest Windows systems.
Let the installer finish running, responding to the remaining command prompts by answering "yes, continue," or by inputting your desired features.
When your computer restarts again, do not touch your keyboard at the "press any key to reboot from CD" prompt to allow your system to finish installing.
Remove the recovery/installation CD from your CD-Rom drive after the installation is complete. Your laptop can reboot from its own drive instead of from the CD.
Install your drivers from the external storage device. Your computer is now ready to go.

Mac OS (Erase and Reinstall)

Insert your Mac OS X Install DVD into the optical drive. Alternately, if your laptop came with a MacBook Air Software Reinstall Drive, put it into one of the USB ports.
Press the "C" button continuously as the computer starts up. If a "mouse" prompt appears, turn on your wireless mouse.
Choose a language and press the right arrow key.
Click on the "Utilities" menu and select "Disk Utility." Choose the drive you want to erase. In most laptops it is called "Macintosh HD" and click "Erase."
A prompt box will ask if you really want to erase the drive. Select yes. After it is done, select "Quit Disk Utility" from the "Utility" menu.
Click "Continue" when the Installer screen comes up and agree to the user license.
Choose the drive you had just erased and click "Install."
- When the dialog box comes up telling you your OS has installed, click "Continue" and then "Restart." The "Setup Assistant" will boot up.
Select your country/region from the selection screen after the machine restarts and select "Continue."
Choose which keyboard layout you want to have and press "Continue."
Select an option from the "migration" screen. You can transfer information from another Mac back onto this laptop if you want or continue with the process.

Turn on your wireless capabilities if the screen appears and you want to use them. You may need to type in a password if your network is protected.
Create your user accounts for your computer. Remember your passwords and continue with the process.
Click "Go" on the "Thank you" screen to finish the assistant program and eject the install DVD by moving its icon into the trash bin.
Reinstall your applications using the "Applications Install Disk" or "MacBook Air Software Reinstall Drive."
Double click "Install Bundled Software" in the dialog box and follow the prompts to finish installing all your applications.
